Alexander and I

The infamously difficult to articulate Alexander Technique has been described as many things: panacea for ailing backs, secret weapon for performing artists, zen for westerners.  To some, the work is using thought to influence the body—exploring functional anatomy and habitual movement patterns; for others, the technique revolves around habit and choice; and still for others, it is a psycho-physical retraining of the nervous system.

At its core, the work remains a philosophy of daily living.  It is a set of procedures and mental directions that, when playfully yet heartfully employed, allow one to “meet the habit of life” in the moment so to work through moments rather than towards ends.

Applicable to any field of study or pursuit, John Dewey called the technique a pre-requisite to all other kinds of learning since the technique provides a formalized framework for "living the questions" and trusting one will someday "live herself into the answers".

And yes, if mysticism and philosophizing don't compel you: science shows it helps with back pain--and nobel prize winners agree.
